Desk by Volume Attack

Max for Live device for Ableton Live 12 · in development

Turn meaning,
not knobs.

Desk reads your Live set, groups the tracks into modules by their job in the song and gives each module two knobs in plain words: tucked ↔ upfront, heavy ↔ clear. The centre of every knob is MINE: the mix Desk built for this track. Everything it moves is a stock Live device you can open.

The device as it is today, in Desk's own colours. Demo data: one real analysis of our promo track. Nothing here talks to Live.

  • Drag a knobup or down to turn it; Shift for fine steps
  • Master paddrag the dot: warm ↔ airy, quiet ↔ loud
  • Double-clickback to MINE
  • Shift + digitstype a value: Shift 4 = +4, Shift 0 = MINE
  • Module nametap to bypass that module; drag to reorder
  • MINE · BPhold to hear while held, click to switch on and off
  • Round key, leftre-analyze: replays the recorded analysis, 4× faster

01 · In your project

Not a file. Your set.

Desk works on the tracks of your set, inside Live: no bouncing, no uploads. ANALYZE reads the tracks, groups them into modules, checks the master and builds the knobs on Live's own devices.

01

Modules by job

Tracks are grouped by what they do in the song. Six modules fit on one level; more go on levels below, one key away.

02

Live's own devices

EQ Eight, Saturator, Limiter, Utility, track volume and sends. Every move Desk makes is on a device you can open, read and change.

03

Your devices stay

Desk adds its devices at the end of a track and sets values. It never removes a device of yours.

02 · Meaning

Turn the meaning. Desk turns the devices.

These are the knobs Desk built for our promo track. Each one reads from −10 to +10 around MINE, and its help text lists the devices it moves in their own units: dB, Hz, %.

03 · Your mix is the centre

MINE is one click away.

The centre of every knob is MINE, the mix Desk built for this track. BP (bypass) is your original. The keys work on the demo at the top of the page.

Mine

Hear MINE

Hold MINE to hear Desk's mix while held; click to switch it on and off. Grey dots keep your own positions. Double-click a knob to send it back to MINE.

Bypass

Hear your original

BP switches all of Desk's processing off, master included; only a safety limiter stays. Tap a module's name to bypass just that module.

Loudness

Measured on the master

An EBU R128 meter inside the device reads the master while the song plays: short-term loudness, and what Spotify's −14 LUFS normalisation will do once it has 10 seconds of the song. On this page there is no audio, so the number is the device's estimate from the master pad.

04 · Status

In development.

Desk is not available yet. This is where it stands today.

Live

Developed on Ableton Live 12.4 Suite, which includes Max for Live.

Your audio

Stays on your computer: Desk reads the set and measures the master locally.

Tested

Every change runs through automated checks of the device, the knob math and the interface before it is merged.
